There are so many web design and development companies in Australia. It is an industry that has very little barriers to entry. Anyone with a bit of HTML knowledge and basic web design skills can pass themselves off as a Web Designer or Website Developer. However, it is an industry that is also infamous for its exit ratios. A month doesn't go by where the news is devoid of another web company going under.

The take-away? Be careful who you choose. Selecting your web designer is no different to choosing a lawyer or an accountant. It is a costly exercise to switch down the track.

Here are a few questions you should be asking when selecting your web design firm:

1. Longevity: are they going to be around in a few years time?
2. Portfolio: is their prior work of a high quality? Have they developed solutions for companies similar to yours?
3. Expertise: are they a bunch of nerdy developers or champagne-sipping "brand consultants"; or do they have a balanced mix of degree-qualified individuals?
4. Nice people: do you get on well with them? Can they speak your language and are they willing to help you?
5. Focus: are they a "$20k+" agency or a company focused on small-medium business?
