Face-to-face with Facebook

If you ask anyone over 35 what Facebook is, they'll probably look at you like you have two heads. However, this web 2.0 website has created an online social phenomenon for millions of people worldwide.
Facebook basics
Facebook is the second-largest social networking website behind MySpace. Through Facebook, users can find and add friends through their networks, allowing them to send messages and stay in touch. The website was launched at the beginning of 2004 as a way to keep Harvard College graduates connected. Shortly after, the website was opened to other colleges. In 2006, it was opened to the public. This month, Facebook was the 7th most visited web site in the world.
Why Facebook is so popular
Facebook includes many great features; including events (which is sensational for organising parties!) and a free classified ads posting directory. Facebook Platform has been a revelation in itself, which allows 3rd party developers to create Facebook plug-ins. There is now more applications that you can poke a stick at, and many wonder if Facebook Platform will take over the Internet itself!
Privacy and security
Like most social networking sites, Facebook raises a bunch of issues around privacy and online safety. Unlike MySpace, profile information can only be accessed once a user has logged in and there a restrictions around which profiles you can view. However, Facebook have recently announced that profile information will be indexed by Google. Facebook also provides news feeds of the online activity of your friends which is some users find invasive.
If you do use Facebook, make sure you play with the security settings to protect your privacy.
Facebook moves from strength to strength
Mark Zuckerberg, the founder, knocked back a $750 million offer from Viacom in January 2006, then later that year knocked back a $1 billion offer from the mighty Yahoo! With the continued success of Facebook in 2007 I think young Mark (he's only 23!!!) has made a pretty good decision not to sell...just yet.
