In 2016-17 around 25 million domestic passengers and 10 million international passengers passed through Melbourne Airport. Add to this the fact that the Melbourne-Sydney air route is the fifth most-travelled passenger route in the world – and you have a very busy airport.

There are a lot of moving parts that go into building a website for an airport that handles that kind of traffic. In web development terms, this means lots of complex integrations with third party systems. This fact was recognised in the recent announcement of the 2017 Kentico Site of the Year Awards, where the Melbourne Airport site took out the top gong in the category of Best Integration.

The Site of the Year Awards attracted an extensive list of nominations from around the globe. Melbourne Airport was shortlisted for the Best Integration category alongside Ascedia’s Milwaukee County Transit System (USA), and Frontis’ Van Raam Website and Intelligence Portal (Netherlands).

The Melbourne Airport site is “a great example of complex integration involving a wide range of different external systems, showcasing Kentico's integration flexibility,” said Kentico Solution Architect, Josef Dvorak.

The site build involved mapping out over a dozen third-party integration points, including flight data information, live traffic feeds providing real-time data on travel time to and from the airport, weather information, emergency notification systems, business process software, and marketing automation and email systems.

The resulting site – a collaboration between Get Started (back end development) and Hardhat Digital (strategy, design and front end) – has enabled Melbourne Airport to provide customers with a much-enhanced online experience. It has also given the airport a far more robust and scalable platform to take it into the future.

Commenting on the outcome of the project, Melbourne Airport Digital Marketing Specialist David Sherman said, “Get Started's knowledge of Kentico, expert development skills and technical advice have resulted in a product which has gone beyond our expectations.”
